Survey

What are the top three skills journalism students should learn in college?:

- Find a style (of writing, producing, reporting, etc.) you like or even a mentor you can emulate when you first start to help develop your own methods.
- Master time management. You can be a phenomenal writer / editor / reporter but if you miss your deadlines, none of it matters.
- If you’re on-air, don’t get “squeaky voice.” Usually when people are nervous their tone gets higher. Keep the bass in your voice.

What were your duties at ATVN? :

Executive Producer

How did ATVN prepare you for your career?:

Hands-on experience with all facets of the job; great preparation for the “real” world.

What is your advice to aspiring journalists?:

Learn everything you can about your job and the jobs of your co-workers. A better understanding of what they do and need will help you perform your job better. Also, it’ll take time but learn to choose your battles. Every station has its ups and downs and you’ll usually find that they’re the same ones even in different shops.

What should graduates keep in mind when negotiating their first job?:

Get everything in writing.
