Survey

What are the top three skills journalism students should learn in college?:

Get really good at AVID and learn the tricks to edit FAST...you’ll have to teach people in your first market and resources are usually strained including edit bays.
Learn how to dress and do your make-up for camera...USC doesn’t have a class for this but its extremly important and makes a huge difference if done right.
Get movement in your standups and make them natural....look like you are really IN the story.

What were your duties at ATVN? :

Graphics Designer, Writer, Shooter, Editor, Reporter

How did ATVN prepare you for your career?:

ATVN shows you first hand whats the chaos of a newsroom is like...and even though its overwhelming just once a week while you are there...think of it five days a week...it really prepares you.

The entire broadcast journalism program prepared me....you can really tell who has had a great journalism education and who hasn’t...so go the extra mile while you’re at SC and most of all have a great time there.

What is your advice to aspiring journalists?:

Even though some of the assignments you have to do for your major...the education you get at USC gives you everything you need for the real world. There was not one thing I didnt know how to do when I got to my first job here in Grand Junction. Also...you get paid NOTHING at your first job so prepare yourself and your parents.
