Producers

Fortes and Foibles

As I approach the halfway point of my time as a producer for Annenberg TV News, I thought it would be a good idea to reflect on what I feel have been my strengths as well as my weaknesses. By assessing my fortes and foibles, I can perform better in the newsroom and in turn, craft a more informative and creative newscast.

One area in which I can improve is how I communicate with everyone on my team. By communicating my goals and objectives more clearly, I will be able to receive more out of the rest of my team. My teammates and I are relatively sound in communicating with one another during the day, but I could do a better job of checking in with my fellow teammates to make sure that we are all on the same page. I need to make sure that I know what the story is, what each piece of video looks like, and what the copy is saying.

Another focus for the second half of my time as a producer is that I should be honing in on the interesting and compelling information to help hook viewers in during teases and intros and keep them interested during the story. With so much commotion and collaboration going on throughout the day, I sometimes try to simply finish stories so that they are checked off of my list instead of making sure that they are creative and engaging. In order to accomplish this task, I can come into the morning meeting with more complete story and package ideas. Doing so would help to make sure that the final product is not simply a recitation of facts, but a creative story that drives the newscast.

I feel as though one of my greatest strengths in the media center, studio, and control room is keeping my team’s energy up and attitudes lifted. I am able to do so by keeping the mood light and encouraging others to strive to do their best work. I have heard from my anchors that my talking to them during the newscast helps them with their reading and some multimedia journalists have shared that they are learning how to choose the most compelling news of a story thanks to my tips. These types of compliments are what keep me going throughout the day and encourage me to do my best work as a producer.
