Put Your Heart into It

Producing two breaking news stories on Monday gave me the most exciting adrenaline rush I have ever experienced as a journalist. Though they were experiences I will never forget, my absolute favorite moment on Monday happened after the show. I had just returned home when I checked my Instagram feed. I looked at the most recent post and instantly got chills. Kaylee Heck, one of our multimedia journalists, posted a picture of herself out in the field with the following caption:

"Today just confirmed that I found what I absolutely love. I was the first reporter on the scene, got footage no other LA stations had, and was the lead story for Annenberg TV News!"

Kaylee eagerly went out in the field when we heard of a crash near campus, on the intersection of Jefferson and Vermont. Reading her post made me so incredibly honored to have produced a segment that made someone want to be a journalist. Since then, I cannot stop smiling when I think of this show. I have always loved the idea that I can impact the lives of my viewers, but I never realized that I can also inspire my fellow journalists.

To make Team Monday more successful, I want us to put our heart into each story, just like Kaylee did. I think sometimes we focus so much on getting our stories on the air, that we forget to enjoy the process. We have the power to produce memorable segments, both for our viewers and for ourselves. At the end of the day, our communal experience researching, writing, shooting and editing should be a story in and of itself!
