Living Up to the Name

ATVN is without a doubt "USC's first source for news." Our commitment to live up to this name by delivering all the latest news relevant to our audience is what makes ATVN's newscast so valuable. We are the best at covering news happening at our school and in our local community, and that is the way it should be! The resources ATVN has, from USC experts to contacts, help us to create a meaningful show for our viewers. Students turn to ATVN and our website for more details on events, accidents and other relevant issues that affect them. Therefore, we are their first source for news.

Whether it is sports, breaking news, on-campus activities or faculty achievements, the story will be in our newscast. Despite the fact that our main audience is USC students and faculty members, the diversity within this demographic allows for our newscast to be colorful and comprehensive. In turn, this is what makes our newscast valuable, both for the ATVN team and for the viewers. Some of the news ATVN covers may not be considered "valuable" for other newscasts. However, because our newscasts weigh USC issues very heavily, it makes the show that much more relevant for our audience.

To gain more audience, we are using various social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter and the web. Linking our stories on Facebook and Twitter allows users to read our stories as they are uploaded. Meaning, they are constantly kept up-to-date. By using Facebook and Twitter, ATVN is able to gain more followers and maintain a greater online presence. Consequently, more audience members will feel encouraged to view our show. Furthermore, by posting our stories on the web, students are able to read the latest on issues they are following.

Of course, we have our limitations in terms of resources. Unlike other news stations, our staff is comprised of students and volunteers. As such, we are sometimes short on MJs, reporters and other team members. We do not have separate writers, shooters and editors. An MJ, reporter or anchor must be able to write, shoot and edit a story single-handedly! ATVN is also limited technologically. Our computers are slow and unreliable, making it difficult to use iNews and the Internet simultaneously. We are short on editing stations, we have only a small number of MJs with cars, and our student-run newscast is not as well-known as are those of larger news stations. Nevertheless, despite these limitations, we are able to to put on a successful show, and that is what makes it all the more rewarding!
