Talk to Each Other
Phew! I went into the second week of ATVN thinking it would be much easier than the first, but boy, was I wrong! I'm not going to lie - producing a 30 minute newscast is hard, even with a three person team. There is just so much going on every second of every minute of the day.
The first week was hectic and insane that it flew by in a blink of an eye. This second week has allowed me to get to know each of my teammates' individual style of working a little bit better. It's hard to believe, but the three of us hardly talked with each other through the day, despite the fact that we all sit in the same 5'x5' space. There is always someone or something pulling our attention away from the desk. Unfortunately, I've found that the three of us not talking to one another does NOT work.
We were able to work around that a bit by typing out notes to one another in the rundown. Some examples: "Need a FS NOW!!!!" and "Assign this ASAP!!!" These notes helped us throughout the day, but it definitely was not the most efficient way of communication. What really brought us together as one were meetings every two hours or so. Speaking to each other in person allowed us to express the urgency for each "to-do" item and also helped us get those miniscule details across.
But no matter how hard we tried to talk to each other and no matter how quickly we tried to get our stories in, there were still mistakes that were made. There is no perfect formula for production. It's about learning how to work with others, as well as yourself. We'll talk to each other a little more more, learn a little more and get a little better at what we do each week.
