If I Could Go Back Time

TAGS:

It's crazy to think that my first MJ shift was over three years ago. Now, with my producing responsibility coming to an end, I can't help but reflect on how things have changed over the years.

To start, a majority of my MJ shifts took place in the old Annenberg building. While that building provided various opportunities for growth, this new Annenberg building allows students to experience with advanced technology and other resources that are prevalent in nearly all television stations, both local and national.

As an MJ, I wish I had better relationships with my producers. To be honest, I do not remember my producers' names. Producers are extremely busy and stressed throughout the day, trying to put on a successful television show. However, I felt very intimidated to ask questions for further clarification on my assignments. I was even nervous to ask any of the advisors questions; I assumed my questions were ones that I should know how to answer myself. My insecurities really affected my performance at ATVN because I could not focus on the task that needed to be completed. Rather, I experienced various emotions in trying to be an MJ that was 'good enough.' Had I had the motivation to ask the producers and advisors any questions I had, I feel that I could have made a more positive contribution.

Secondly, I wish I were more proactive in the required workshops. Furthermore, I should have asked questions and taken more notes to ensure I fully understood how iNews and other editing programs worked. Again, my intimidation and fear prevented me from doing this. However, I would not have been as confused during my shifts has I received further clarification on all of the foreign programs; I was new to everything and felt all of the other MJs were much more educated on how to work these programs.

As a producer, I have done my best to work with each MJ to ensure he/she feels comfortable during his/her shift. One way I have accommodated the MJs is by asking where they enjoy working the most. For example, some MJs prefer editing while others prefer filming and writing. When the MJs know they can contribute in an area they feel most comfortable, then they are more willing to have a positive attitude and overall contribution.

When I decided to study journalism, I knew it was a competitive, yet highly rewarding field. Journalism is critical to a high functioning democracy and is the backbone of the media industry. A successful journalist encompasses honesty, integrity, a passion for truth, and the guts to go out and get the story. As graduation approaches, I finally feel confident and prepared to contribute to this industry.
