Web First, Cutlines Later
I'll admit, I was a little nervous stepping into my role as Graphics/Web teammate. Our discussions in class about graphics and web always centered on making sure both graphics and web stories caught the viewers' attention and kept them interested. It may seem easy, but once you're in front of the computer staring at the rundown with only an AP Wire for guidance creating an informative but catchy cutline or headline initially feels almost impossible.
Around 10 a.m. I discovered the more I talked to MJs and reporters about their stories the easier my job became. Once I had gathered the essentials and substance of each of our stories, I was able to discern what information would catch a viewers eye either on the web or while watching our newscast. Checking in constantly with both Funmi and Susan also helped with my job duties. As lead producer, Susan specified what information she wanted on each full screen and we worked together to ensure the information was clear and concise. When I was unclear as to what video we were using in our show, Funmi was extremely helpful in telling me the visual aspects for our VO and SOT stories.
By the end of the day, I was really pleased with how the graphic elements of our show came together. Sadly, not every cutline was as witty as I would have liked. To be honest, I was out of creative juices by about 4 p.m. and was on deadline, but constantly communicating with my fellow producers, and Jerome helped me refine my ideas.
Looking forward to being video teammate for the third time next week!
