The best live shots are ones that go with timely and relevant news. For example, in Monday's newscast we had two live shots and both worked really well because the news stories were breaking stories right near USC. I feel that viewers can tell when a live shot is done just for the sake of doing one and when it is done because it is our responsibility to be on the scene.

Even though live shots are cool and innovative, I want to use them strategically so that ATVN showcases its news judgment as well as its ambition. As such, I think hard news stories near campus that affect USC students are perfect for live shots. Other news stories can work well too but the key element would be how many people actually care about that story. For a feature story on an event on campus, a live shot would bring the audience into the event as well as show our commitment to reporting news that is relevant to a large number of students.
