Producers

How to Produce a Show in 10 Weeks

As a senior, I've worked at ATVN for four years now. From a multimedia journalist, to sports anchor, to assistant director in the studio, I felt like I had done it all coming in as a producer. But the truth is, not matter how long you work at ATVN, there is always something new to learn.

That being said, my biggest advice for those who are planning to produce in the spring or in the years to come is to keep an open mind. ATVN is a team, and a smart team at that. In order to be a successful producer, you need to constantly take praise and criticism and everything in between from everyone. Every person on staff has an idea or opinion that can truly make your newscast stand alone as amazing.

I think the first time I really understood that concept was during one of the morning meetings. All three of the producers were running through our story lists and had to argue why we wanted to package certain stories. In my mind, there were only three things that were worthy of being packaged. However, the other producers brought up valid points and we ended up packaging one of their ideas as well.

While I may have been hesitant at first, I had to realize that there were other options--beside my ideas--that should be considered. You're told going through your journalism core curriculum to hold your ground and argue your ideas because that's the only way you're going to succeed. But in all honesty, the opposite couldn't be more true. You need to take in all opinions, thoughts and ideas before in order to develop the best possible newscast.

That is my biggest piece of advice.

Although, watching the news (especially Brian Williams), taking note of everything Serena and Stacy have to say, and always remembering to put writers in the writers colum doesn't hurt either.

So take notes those of you out there that plan on producing. Bring a pen and paper and listen to what everyone--and I mean EVERYONE--has to say. Who knows, you could find that your best story idea comes from someone else in the newsroom.
