Looking Inward and Onward!
As the end of the semester approaches, it's time to do a little introspection and think about the goals I set for myself. Even though it's been a crazy week and crunch time is around the corner, I still don't want to lose sight of my initial producer goals!
Improving my presence and leadership in the newsroom was something I aimed to do at the very beginning of the semester - being vocal in the morning meeting and communicating well with my team were aspects of producing that I concentrated on the most. Now that I have a stronger sense of news judgment and more confidence in decision-making, I feel much more comfortable as a leader, and someone who people can come to for guidance.
Communicating with the producing team is something that I think we all still need to keep in mind as the semester wraps up, and for next year. We all have a lot of focus on our own tasks and are efficient as individuals, but the small communication lapses tend to trip us up. Even though next week is our last show, I'd really like to try to utilize the newsroom messaging system, because it might help us to make those quick comments that can make a difference. On Thursday some of us were taking calls and not letting each other know what the reporter/MJ said - the messaging system might help to save those comments and notes. Also, Riannon's Google Document on Monday was a great and very detailed way to keep track of one another. I'd like to give that a try for Thursday's team as well.
One of my biggest goals for the semester was to learn and grow from my mistakes. I'm really glad that we had the opportunity to blog about our days, because each week my blog reminds me of a mistake or hectic experience that I learned from. I still have a lot to learn, but with each week I've added another valuable piece of wisdom to my arsenal. I'm really looking forward to continuing to grow next fall, but also helping other producers with the knowledge that I've accumulated!
