Right Here, Right Now
Live shots take the viewers in real time to a scene where the reporter can not only give the newest information, but show the visuals of a live event.
Although we weren't able to have a live shot in our newscast Tuesday because our Streambox operator wasn't trained, we all came up with ideas for possible locations to shoot one.
On my story list, I originally pitched a Streambox idea for our reporter to go to the Child Abuse Prevention Center (CAPC) dinner event hosted by the LA Kings after their day long fundraiser. Child abuse cases within the United States have increased over the years and are a current issue.
The Streambox shot would focus on the fundraiser earlier in the day and how much money was raised for the cause, giving facts about the event and showing the LA Kings with other volunteers and event supporters.
I would have also asked the reporter to interact with the people at the event in support of the cause, including the LA Kings player Dustin Brown and his wife Nicole, who initiated the team’s involvement.
The viewers would have been able to see firsthand the fundraiser as a whole and how the Kings were reaching out to the community. I believe this would have been a relevant live shot because it would take the audience of our newscast to an event that they would not have otherwise experienced.
Our job as journalists is to bring the most relevant, interesting, and current news to the audience. This Streambox live shot would have been able to not only discuss the increasingly relevant issues of child abuse in our community, but the significance of the event itself, and the impact it had on our community as a whole.
