Achieving My Producer Goals
Looking back over the past few months, I believe I’ve achieved all of my goals.
At the beginning of the semester I was worried about all of the responsibilities I had as a producer and as a leader in the newsroom. But, now as I get closer to the end of the semester and with only one live show left I do not feel nervous anymore, I feel accomplished.
One of the goals that I had for myself was to have more mini-meetings with my teammates. Every week my team has gotten better at communicating, and we have been able to discuss what items we need from each other. As a result, the newsroom has run much more smoothly.
For example, this week I was video teammate so I had to constantly communicate with my lead producer to make sure all of the video matched what she had in mind for the show. In addition, I had to also make sure that the news scripts matched the full screens that the graphics teammate created.
I believe that one of my goals “creativity” has really improved. I am able to expand on my stories more than I ever have before, but I also think that’s a goal that will continually get better over time. This goes for my other goal as well—to improve on my teases. I wrote that as a producer I wanted to be able to create “catchy” teases, and I know that if I compared my teases from my first show to now there would be a huge difference.
Producing has truly taught me a lot, and it is great to see how a newscast is put together. Now, every time I watch a major network’s newscast I look at it with an “editorial eye”.
