A Producer's Parting Words
I can’t believe the semester is already over. Producing has truly taught me what it takes to put together an entire newscast, as well as how to be a leader in the newsroom.
As my parting words from producer to future producer, here a few tips that I wish I would have known at the beginning of the semester:
Pace yourself. The mornings always seem slow and like you have a lot of time, but you don’t. If you don’t work hard in the morning then you’re rushing after 1 pm to get everything done. Trust me, even though you’ve committed to a 12-hour day, it goes by really fast.
Communicate! I can’t stress this enough. At the beginning of the semester there always seemed to be a lack of communication because everyone was so focused on his or her specific duties. But remember on top of what you’re in charge of that you’re also a producing team! You need to communicate with all of your producers, anchors, mjs, etc., in order to have a great show.
Lastly, the small things add up. It’s hard when the newsroom is hectic and there seems like a never-ending list of things to do. But, as a producer you really have to pull together and not let the small details slip because it can really affect your show.
ATVN has really taught me that you shouldn’t be scared to try new things. As a producer, I wish I added more fun and creative elements in my show at the beginning of the semester rather than waiting until my very last newscast.
My last show as a lead producer I had a live shot, a reporter at the chroma key, and so much more and they all turned out great. So, my advice would be that I know you want to make things perfect, but really pushing for those extra elements can really make for an even better show.
Don’t forget that Stacy and Serena are always there to help you. They continually push you to do your best, and teach you how to be an excellent producer.
In the end, the newsroom is a really fun and exciting place to be, and the best part about next semester is that as future producers the 6 pm ATVN live show will now be your creation. Enjoy it!
