Producers

One Team, One Mission

Michael Jordan once said, "Talent wins games, but team work and intelligence wins championships."

Team Wednesday may have not been dribbling a ball up and down the court, but I definitely think our first full show was a slam dunk. None of the success we earned, however, would have been possible without the help of every single person in the media center.

To be honest, I can't say I began Wednesday as optimistically as I ended it. I strolled into the newsroom at 8 AM feeling quite sleepy, but less than ten minutes into the morning meeting, I was awake and alert. High-energy and positive vibes radiated off my fellow producers, and it was relatively easy to bounce ideas back and forth. We started off with just a few vague pitches, and within the hour, we had outlined more than a dozen quality story ideas.

Once it came time to branching off and taking our specific producing role, I felt a little overwhelmed when I realized how much work I faced as the Web and Graphics teammate. Again though, within minutes, my worries dissolved as soon as the web students began to approach me, asking what stories they should pursue. Together, we drafted and published some very interesting and attention-grabbing stories, like the one about the tree falling onto a car. It was so refreshing to see my web team take the initiative and write multiple stories in a short, four hour shift.

After wrapping up with my main web duties, I shifted gears to graphics. I started to correspond with the art director as soon as possible, to make sure we were on the same page in terms of what visuals to use for the graphics. We checked in with each other constantly to give updates about our progress, which was extremely helpful because I always knew where the show stood in terms of graphics.

I cannot say that Wednesday went flawlessly; there were times when I was totally crunched for time, or I had six different people looking to me for guidance, or when I was just so hungry I couldn't even concentrate for one more minute. Nevertheless, there was a huge, positive difference between run-through week and this week, which all boils down to the key component of communication. Taking the time to talk to everyone in the media center, especially my fellow producers, really connects the dots of a newscast, and it can be the difference between a hot mess and a professional looking show.

We are nowhere near perfect, and there will be room for improvement each week. But with that being said, I think Team Wednesday is going to be winning championships in no time.
