Liven Up The Show

We only have three more shows left in the semester, and the pressure's on to make them count.

Team Wednesday has been trying to produce quality shows that incorporate live elements for the past few weeks, and I can say with confidence that those elements have really positively impacted our broadcasts. It helps the show break away from the typical SOT, VO, package, repeat format, and keeps viewers on their toes, because you never know exactly what a guest is going to say.

Last night's live guest, the "sexpert," allowed us to talk about sex week on air, which is a topic that could have been awkward or uncomfortable to discuss without the doctor being present. We were able to explore the subject of sex more thoroughly and candidly, and it was undoubtably more entertaining for viewers. However, while I love our integration of live guests, I want to continue exploring our options. Now I want to either have two guests on the show simultaneously for a debate or discussion, or have a reporter go completely live during the broadcast.

Moving forward, I definitely plan to incorporate even more live shots in the show. Once the technology is available, I would like to toss to a reporter live on campus or somewhere in the city, leading into his or her package. Next week's football game against Cal would be a great opportunity for Thursday's broadcast, since there will be fans arriving to the game during normal class hours. I will be on the lookout for other potential live shot occasions while I am putting together package ideas and preparing for the newscast next week.

I want to constantly move forward and out-do ourselves. But with that being said, it is important to keep in mind that our live aspects, whether they be live stand-ups or live in-studio guests, must be exciting and interesting to our audience. I don't want to stick a live guest in the rundown simply for the sake of going live, but rather to enhance the show in a way that just a sound bite or video could not. I want to make the show as vivid and LIVEly as possible.

Pun intended.
