Ch-Ch-Changes
As a producer, I easily forget sometimes to think like a viewer. It is such a simple thing, yet I tend to forget this small detail when wrapped up in the chaos of producing a live news broadcast.
It may seem a little ironic, but I never really watch television news. This could be because I have a short attention span, or simply because it just doesn't interest me the same way it interests other viewers. Regardless of the reason, I realize it is important to put yourself in the viewers shoes and ask "Well, what would I want to watch?" when deciding what to include in my rundown.
Aside from this, it is important to recognize and choose stories that offer the opportunity to get creative. In order to do this, I have come to realize that you must actually read through and fully understand each story that comes up on the wires. When I am producing I often get overwhelmed by everything going on around me, and can forget to spend an equal amount of time developing each and every story in the rundown.
Taking the time to actively think about ways to get more interactive with a story's subject matter or looking for ways to incorporate different elements into a story, will ultimately make your show much more interesting overall. Traditional news is a thing of the past. But luckily for me, producing has helped me to start adapting to the change.
