Getting to the Studio and Having Faith in MJs
Continuing on last week's entry, I foucsed my efforts this week on improving copy editing throughout the show. This was a challenge once again, as copy editing is one of the myriad things a producer needs to get done at - and only at - the end of the day. So I employed several strategies. First I tried to take my most trusted MJs and get them grinding on making copy in the script better. There were several good writers free, so I put them to good use by having them scan the entire rundown for good copy, CGs, outcues, runs times, etc.
But as a producer, I must remember that I cannot leave any portion of the show unchecked. It is my duty to know everything that is going into my show, and so I took a second measure to ensure that my copy editing was up to the task: I got to the studio extra early. By getting out of the newsroom and over to the studio, I was able to both copy edit on iNews right in front of me and by listening to the run-throughs that were happening in the background.
Logically, I could always improve my copy by making sure that I run through it personally at all times of the day. That's always a goal I have in mind, but keeping track of every element of the show at every moment in the day just isn't realistic. By using these techniques and by continuing to look for more innovative ways to make sure our copy is of quality, I can continue to make our show more well rounded and professional.
