Lead on, Lead Strong
I can’t believe the last Tuesday ATVN show has come and gone. It seems like just yesterday I was blindly building a rundown, unsure of what I was doing. To the next group of J403 producers I leave you my last ATVN thoughts.
My strongest piece of advice is to have confidence. Without confidence, it will be very difficult for you to build your rundown with efficiency. It’s okay to doubt yourself but you need to know exactly why and where you place news items in the rundown. Another piece of advice: it’s definitely okay to be wrong. It’s not even that you’re wrong; it just means that someone else’s idea may be different than yours and may work better for the newscast. The most important thing is to back up your own ideas and be confident. I wish I would have known that earlier on in the semester because I feel I would have been a more efficient leader. I also feel I would have been able to justify my ideas more thoroughly.
I have learned so much from my experience as a leader in the newsroom. Having alternated between lead producer, video teammate, and web and graphics teammate, I have gained skills that I can surely take to any future career. The relationships you build as a producer and the people you learn to trust and work with are invaluable.
I cannot stress how important teamwork is at ATVN. Just like on a team sport or organization, communication is key. You need to constantly communicate with your fellow teammates on the latest updates for news stories in your broadcast.
I challenge you to work to the best of your ability, think outside the box, and remember to have fun! Sometimes, the atmosphere in the newsroom and studio is very stressful but it’s important to take a breather and have fun with it. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and you should definitely use it to your advantage.
