Producers

Rejection is Not All Bad

TAGS:

Especially as a producer, quality control is key. With so many MJs running back from events, uploading and editing videos, and writing scripts, it is easy to let a few questionable stories hit the air. But the goal will always be to eliminate them entirely.

I think generally, I edit well. When MJs show me what they've edited, I often have the mind to approve their initial cuts so we can have more stories online and MJs moving on to new stories, but my gut always stops me. I will tell MJs to re-edit videos 3 or 4 times if need be, because I hate putting on sloppy newscasts.

This week in particular, as the video teammate, I felt that I had a couple of journalists who were struggling to edit video just right. Yet even with my occasionally repetitive corrections, I felt that we were able to get more video on the air earlier this week than ever before. This makes me feel confident in my decisions to push my MJs and I am optimistic about the coming weeks.

Copy editing stories was a little bit more difficult for me this week. Each day, it's either easy to come up with ways to word phrases or it's not, and this week I felt that I had a few MJs who struggled with their stories and needed some inspiration. Nonetheless, the stories that went up were mostly well-edited, with a few exceptions. I need to have a better sense of what never works on the air, such as "one of our MJs has the inside scoop." These will come with time, though my instincts should correct many errors.

Overall, I am very happy with this week's show. At last, we are getting the hang of putting together a newscast, and the final hours are not a total scramble. I'm excited to watch our news team continue to grow.
