The USC Angle

TAGS:

What separates our newscast from other newscasts in Los Angeles is that we sit in the middle of a very specific and interesting body of people on the USC campus. Students tend to be very opinionated and passionate. What's more, they are always plentiful and happy to give interviews.

Our faculty is also incredibly useful. When we need an expert on almost any subject, chances are there is a professor at an office within walking distance of our newsroom who can answer our questions and add a new dimension to our broadcast. They are often just as willing to be on camera as our students and tend to have valuable things to say.

As "USC's first source for news," we have to be the first responders to any and all action that occurs at USC. Ideally, we want our sports coverage at every practice because we never know when a player is going to get injured or a huge announcement is going to be made. If there is a tragedy just off campus or the row gets shut down, we want to be the first ones with the story and the station that has the most in-depth coverage. Not only are we broadcasting to USC students, but people across the country will look to our newscasts and our website when huge news breaks at USC. That is why it is just as important that we put all of our big USC stories online, complete with extra footage that didn't make it into our newscasts and updates as stories develop.

With that in mind, I believe I have to do a better job of incorporating web into my news day. I need to be thinking early about what stories would work well for our website, especially if they are USC based. I also need to be thinking about what extra footage can be put up online when it doesn't fit well in our newscast.
