Know Everything There Is To Know

Trying to build and create a newscast by 6 pm is not easy. But adding in the idea of converging all media outlets like radio, television and print, makes it even harder. But I'm up for the challenge. I absolutely love the new Media Center, the fancy equipment we are able to use and the fact that we have all forms of media in one area. Even though we have made things easier in order to converge on all platforms, convergence still comes with its difficulties.

For example, Annenberg Radio News will use a lot of the sound that ATVN's MJs go out and get because it just makes sense. We wouldn't send two reporters to the same location just because we both need sound from the event. It makes sense to just send one person with a camera and ARN can grab the sound and ATVN can have the video. It's smart because if we only send one MJ, then we can use that other person for a different story we all want. This system works out great if the MJ or reporter knows how to cut audio for ARN and send it to their drive on Fork. Well, on Wednesday I asked an MJ to cut audio for ARN first, then work on the VO for ATVN, but she said she didn't know how to cut audio. Unfortunately, this was the first time this had happened to me and I also didn't know how to cut audio and how to send it to ARN. I didn't work in the Media Center last semester and never learned how to do it this semester. I know how to edit video on Adobe Premiere, but I never learned how to use Audacity. So I had to get someone from ARN to teach this MJ how to cut the audio and send it, but if I would have known how to do it, the process would have gone a lot smoother.

That is one of the tough things about the Media Center is knowing how to work everything because you never know what you could be doing or who you're working for when you come in. I think since this is the first year the Media Center is being used, it's a learning experience. But also, since this is the first building the incoming students will be using, this is going to be all they know. So once the people who have used the old facilities have graduated, I actually think things will go a lot smoother because the new Media Center will be the only thing the students know.

In the morning meeting, I really try to think how stories can be portrayed on all platforms. Even when radio doesn't want it, I think how it can be put on social media and the most engaging way to put it up. If video comes back and I know ARN wants it, then I try to tell them as soon as it gets back so they are aware and it can be used in their radio show. Communication is key to convergence if it's going to work. Just like anything else in being successful in the Media Center, if you aren't communicating with others, then everything will crumble.
