ATVN positions and duties:

Executive producer, show producer, writer, floor manager

How did ATVN prepare you for your current job?

The hands-on experience at ATVN prepared me more than anything else I did during journalism school. Working at ATVN also taught me how to function under deadline pressure.

What is your advice to aspiring journalists?

Go beyond your journalism classes. They are important but what will set you apart from others when you’re trying to land that first job is your experience at ATVN and your internships.

What are the top three skills college journalism students should be working on in order to be prepared for their first broadcasting job?

1. Writing, writing, writing. 2. Learn to work well under deadline pressure. 3. Story ideas - go beyond just reading the newspaper everyday and knowing a lot about current issues, and come up with interesting story ideas that your station or show could cover. This is a great way to get yourself noticed by the higher-ups.

What is the most important thing a college journalist should know when he or she is trying to negotiate his or her first job?

Don’t be afraid to ask. The worst thing that can happen is they say no.

What prepared you most for your current job?

ATVN and my internship at Dateline NBC.
