Bio: I graduated in 2001 and got sidetracked doing temp jobs and managing a GAP store. I heard about an opening in Yakima (2 hours from home) and drove over to give the news director a tape. He offered me a reporting job that makes less than half the money I made at the GAP, but opportunity only knocks once… you’d better answer the door.
ATVN positions and duties: Anchor (3 years)
Reporter (1 year)
How did ATVN prepare you for your current job?
Practice makes perfect, and there’s nothing like practicing the pressure of deadline writing. Missing your slot is not an option here. The anchor is going to say, “Here’s Anthony with the story,” at 5:01 and I can either toss to a story or stare into the camera for 75 seconds. ATVN helps you feel that pressure of hitting your deadline.
What is your advice to aspiring journalists?
Fight On!
What are the top three skills college journalism students should be working on in order to be prepared for their first broadcasting job?
There are five things you’ll need to get your first job in journalism (I haven’t figured out how to be successful yet, but I hope they’re the same five skills):
Being… FAITHFUL, SCHOLARLY, SKILLFUL, COURAGEOUS & AMBITIOUS.
What is the most important thing a college journalist should know when he or she is trying to negotiate his or her first job?
Do whatever the News Director wants you to do. If you don’t, s/he will go to the next candidate on his/her list.
What prepared you most for your current job?
Serena. Do whatever she says, whenver she says. She has a breadth of knowledge and is one of the indispensible parts of the J-School at ‘SC.
