Bio:

I interned at KRON in San Francisco and at KGUN in Tucson as well as working at ATVN for two years after transferring to USC.

ATVN positions and duties:

Worked as a WSE, Producer and Reporter for ATVN.

How did ATVN prepare you for your current job?

ATVN prepared me by teaching me the daily routine of putting together a daily newscast. It also gave me hands on experience doing packages on my own and preparing myself for a job after school.

What is your advice to aspiring journalists?

Set out your goals, write them down on a piece of paper and follow them through. Believe that you actually have the job you want and believe that YOU WILL GET IT. Work everyday on that goal putting all your energy and effort into it until you succeed. I really wanted to work for CNN after school and specifically in the political unit and focused all my energy, drive, and work into achieving the goal which was finally made possible. Finally, make connections! The more connections the better, stay in contact with people you work with, treat everybody with respect because you never know who will end up scoring you a job.

What are the top three skills college journalism students should be working on in order to be prepared for their first broadcasting job?

Deadlines!!! Deadlines is first for sure. Second, be prepared, always be prepared and informed for any situation / story. Lastly, familiarize yourself with the entire newsroom and try to learn every aspect there is to putting a broadcast together, trust me it will help!

What is the most important thing a college journalist should know when he or she is trying to negotiate his or her first job?

Do your research on the station or company you want to work for. Don’t go into an interview knowing nothing about their coverage / company because you will not get the job.
