Bio: I was born in Northern California, but have also lived in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Canada. After graduating from SC I moved to Beijing and enrolled in an intensive one-year Mandarin language program at the Beijing Language and Culture University. I moved back to Hong Kong and landed my first job as a reporter for ATV’s English news. On top of working as a local news reporter, I also anchor the news and the weather. I have interned at the Los Altos Town Crier (newspaper) in Los Altos, CA and CNBC Asia in Hong Kong.
ATVN positions and duties: Reporter, writer/shooter/editor, studio camera
How did ATVN prepare you for your current job?
Being a “one-man-band” deal so you can learn how to put together all the elements to a story on a deadline. Even though I don’t have to do all the shooting or editing now, I still have to direct the crew on what I need, and I wouldn’t know how to without the experience of doing it all myself.
What is your advice to aspiring journalists?
Build contacts. It really helped to know people in the field to mentor me during the job search time. Also make sure to take advantage of Annenberg’s resources to make a good resume tape.
