Senior Gift Goes Green

The members of the USC senior class will be funding the installation of a new Solar Thermal Energy System for the Lyon Center Pool.

This year’s senior class at USC could be paving the way for an eco-friendly campus for future generations. USC voted that the annual senior gift will be a new solar thermal energy system for the Lyon Center Pool.

The USC Senior Gift Advisory Board announced the gift early Tuesday morning saying it was excited to be leaving USC a meaningful gift.

Senior Cornelia Moore says the senior gift is helping USC take a step in the right direction.

“Our class, in partnership with the USC Office of Sustainability, will be a major contributor to making our USC Campus ‘greener,’” the board said in an e-mail thanking seniors who participated in the vote for the class gift. The vote for the gift took place over nearly three weeks.

Senior Cornelia Moore said she voted for the solar heater because she supports USC’s campus moving in an “eco-friendly direction.”

“I think it’s a great idea, and I really think USC will benefit from this gift,” Moore said.

Funds for the installation of the solar heater will be dependent on contributions made by members of USC’s graduating class. According to the board, the senior gift is the only other fundraising initiative at USC focused on making the campus “greener,” aside from the campus center focused on sustainability.

Several seniors said they are donating to the gift because of the environmental impact it will have, but Senior Charlotte Yang said she will be contributing to the gift for more personal reasons.

“USC gave me a great education.  I have really grown to love the place, so I will gladly contribute to the gift,” Yang said.

The USC senior class is holding a fundraiser Tuesday night at 21 Flavors to kickoff the fundraiser. Seniors who participated in the vote for the class gift will be able to get one free topping, according to the e-mail sent out by the advisory board.

The board said they will be there to answer questions and give seniors an opportunity to make their gifts in person.

Seniors will be able to contribute to the gift through April 30.
