American students in London celebrating royal wedding

These college students are hosting their own watch parties and providing supplies for the big day.

American students studying abroad in London are experiencing the royal wedding festivities firsthand.

Josanta Gray, a junior at USC, said she gave blankets to people camping out for the big day.

“I’m supposed to meet them out there at three a.m. and be with them for the rest of the night,” Gray said as she was preparing for the camp out.

Gray said she has found that the British are split on their enthusiasm for the wedding.

“Some people are oblivious and making other plans and just trying to avoid all of the chaos and traffic,” Gray said. “And other people are really into it.”

According to Gray, the most enthusiastic fans of the wedding are Americans currently in England because this type of event never happens in the United States.

“It’s a modern-day fairytale,” Gray said. “It’s like being in a Disney movie right now.”

Zack Goldman, a junior at Kenyon College in Ohio, said he noticed that the wedding has taken on a different role for the British than for wedding watchers from other nations.

“I think the rest of the world cares more about the spectator aspect of it,” Goldman said. “It’s more of a celebrity event and a ‘who’s who’ to see who is there.”

Goldman said people he knows are going to pubs to celebrate. Goldman, himself, is also hosting a watch party in London.

“Pubs are opening early,” Goldman said. “It’s a competition between each pub to see who can look the most ostentatiously British.”
