Police identify gunman in Monterey Park shootout

Authorities identified the man who was killed in a shootout with police in Monterey Park.

Authorities identified a suspect on Monday who was shot and killed by police officers after opening fire on authorities from Monterey Park Police Department late Sunday afternoon.

The suspect was identified as 63-year-old Edgar Battad, according to sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore.

Officers were responding to a hit-and-run crash and a stabbing victim at Garfield and Newmark avenues when the suspect began firing at them. The officers returned fire.

One officer was taken to the hospital and treated for a non-life threatening injury. Two civilians also were wounded and the stabbing victim was treated at the hospital, according to Deputy Benjamin Grubb of the Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau.

Whitmore said police recovered a .44-caliber Magnum handgun at the scene.

Authorities originally believed there was a second suspect, but this was determined to be unfounded, according to reports from the Sheriff’s department.

The Monterey Park Police Department and Sheriff’s homicide detectives are working together in the investigation.
