Magic Johnson Announces Program To Help Urban Students
Magic Johnson announced at a press conference today that The Magic Johnson Foundation and EdisonLearning will work together on a joint program to assist underperforming public schools.
According to a study, 1.2 million students failed to graduate with a diploma each year, costing the nation $400 billion in lost earnings, taxes and productivity last year.
Magic Johnson-EdisonLearning Assist alliance plans to address the high dropout rates by partnering with local school districts to help at-risk students complete their education and turn around underperforming schools.
“Every student in the United States, regardless of ethnic or economic status should have access to education that enables them to succeed,” said Jeff Wahl, President and CEO of EdisonLearning, “Magic Johnson-EdisonLearning Assist provides an important safety net for students who have left or are at risk of leaving the tradition school setting.”
Unlike a traditional school setting, Magic Johnson Bridgescape Learning Centers will provide a blend of one-on-one and group instruction mixed with custom tailored curriculum for each student. In addition, The Magic Johnson Alliance School Turnaround Initiative will partner with local school districts by dedicating an EdisonLearning Achievement Team to implement a customized learning environment to ensure high student performance.
“Improving the quality of life for people residing in urban areas is my life’s passion,” said Mr. Johnson, “and through Magic John Enterprises we have been part of positive change in these communites.”
Magic Johnson Foundation has worked over the past 20 years to develop and support community organization that addresses educational, health and social needs of ethnically diverse and urban communities.
