U.S. Citizen Dies in Kabul Embassy Shooting
An Afghan employee opened fire at a CIA office in Kabul on Sunday, killing a U.S. citizen and wounding a second, both of whom are believed to be CIA employees.
The gunman was eventually shot and killed by the building’s security personnel.
The CIA annex is in a highly-secured section of the city and officials are uncertain as to how the gunman was able to smuggle a weapon into the building.
Officials are also uncertain as to whether the gunman was working with one of the area’s militant groups or was merely a disgruntled employee.
"The situation is fluid, and the investigation is ongoing," an official said Monday, maintaining anonymity due to the situation’s sensitivity.
This is the district’s third major security breach in just two weeks.
In mid-September the embassy district was held under a 22-hour siege by Taliban insurgents who launched rocket-propelled grenades at the U.S. Embassy, NATO headquarters and other buildings.
Last week, a bomber disguised as a Taliban delegate assassinated former President Burhanuddin Rabbani in his home, which is located at the back of the U.S. embassy.
