USC Alumni in New York Discuss the City's Atmosphere on 9/11

While images of the ceremony at Ground Zero were broadcast around the nation, two Annenberg alumni discuss their experience in the heart of New York City.

USC alumnus Callie Schweitzer ('11) was only in 7th grade in Larchmont, New York when the September 11th attacks happened, but she said the effects of that day still remain with her 10 years later.

Now the Assistant to the Publisher at Talking Points Memo, a web-based political journalism organization, in New York City, Schweitzer said Sunday that Manhattan had an eerie feel.

As for the continued coverage of the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, Schweitzer said for those close to her, it was a personal decision how much to watch.

"For me, my friends, my family, I think that the coverage is really something that you choose to participate in or you don't," Schweitzer said. "It's there for you to mourn and to pay attention to and to grieve, or it's not. You know, I have plenty of friends who said, 'I'm watching football today. I've done and heard enough about this,' and that's one side. And for other people, they can't get enough of it."

ATVN alumnus Marin Austin ('11), now a graduate student at the Columbia School of Journalism, was at Ground Zero in downtown Manhattan for the commemoration ceremony Sunday, where she documented the event through photos.

"Today is nothing like September 11th 2001," Austin said. "The sky is gray. America is stronger."

Schweitzer echoed those thoughts, citing unity as the main theme of the day.

"This really is something that unites us," Schweitzer said. "Something that brings us together, not only as a city, but as a country, and there's definitely a sense of pride. Pride in being a New Yorker and pride in being an American."
