Study: Men Just as Likely to Binge Eat

Results also suggested that overeating is linked to obesity and depression.

A new study released Wednesday shows that men are nearly as suspectible as women to develop eating disorders caused by issues such as depression and anxiety.

Wesleyan University's Ruth Striegel conducted a study which found about 11 percent of women and 7.5 men were likely binge-eaters. The numbers also suggested that binge-eating is related to obesity and depression.

Not only are women the only ones feeling guilty over eating a particularly large meal. Men, too, experience behaviors such as fasting or exercising after binge-eating.

Thirty-seven percent of men reported as having behaviors consistent with binge-eating were in treatment for depression, and 64 percent of them were obese.

According to the National Eating Disorder Association, as many as 10 million females and 1 million males are dealing with eating disorders such anorexia, bulimia and binge-eating. The organization also cites causes of eating disorders which include depression, troubled relationships and cultural pressures.

USC has resources to help students with eating disorders who seek treatment or counseling. The University Park Health Center Eating Disorder Treatment Team offers services such as individual and group counseling, physical evaluations and nutritional consultations to help combat students' health conditions.
