McCourt Divorce Settlement Reached [Updated]
[Update, Oct. 17, 3:15 p.m. PDT] Frank and Jamie McCourt released a joint statement Monday regarding their divorce settlement.
"The terms of the settlement, which is already in effect, will
remain private. Jamie will be withdrawing her opposition to the Dodgers
proposed sale of media rights and instead will be filing papers in support of
the process proposed by the Dodgers," they said.
The agreement, which is the most expensive divorce settlement in California history, will remove any ownership claim Jamie McCourt might have on the Dodgers.
An initial settlement had been reached in June, but was rejected after Frank McCourt took the baseball team into bankruptcy later that month.
In an effort to keep the team, Frank requested the right to auction Dodgers TV rights, a bid that was opposed by Major League Baseball and Fox.
Jamie might be out of the picture, but Frank McCourt still faces contention from other corners.
A new battle is brewing between Frank McCourt and baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, who wants the federal bankruptcy court to order the team sold, the Times reports.
Selig opposed Frank's request to auction TV rights because a large portion of the $385 million would have been diverted from the team, although the court had not ruled whether McCourt could use that money to satisfy his divorce settlement.
Last week, attorneys for Major League Baseball pulled a motion to disqualify attorneys representing the Dodgers in the team's bankruptcy case, at the suggestion of a court-appointed mediator.
League attorneys had originally pushed the motion because they accused Dodgers attorneys of advancing the interests of owner Frank McCourt at the overall expense of the team.
