UC Riverside announced in a press release that a cyberhacker is responsible for compromising cash registers at food services locations across campus.

The problem was first identified and repaired last week, but the hackers may have gained access up to 5,000 individual card numbers. The UC Riverside Vice Chancellor sent the message to the media because she is scared visitors of the university might be victims of the security breach too.

The hackers got access of credit card numbers, cardholder names, expiration dates and debit card pin numbers.

"We are doing everything we can think of to notify people," Vice Chancellor Gretchen Bolar said.

The university is specifically warning people who used a credit or debit card at any UCR Dining Services dating from earlier this Summer to as recently as Nov. 16.

UCR is recommending that victims should monitor their card statements and activity carefully, and report any suspicious activity. Any fraud should be reported to UCR through a website.
