Occupy UCLA Protests Regents' Budget Meeting
UCLA students gathered with other protesters, many from UC schools and local Occupy movements, at the Westwood campus Monday morning to speak out against what could be another tuition hike, depending on the outcome of the UC Regents' budget meeting.
The Regents are set to vote on how much money they will request from the state legislature. If the amount is denied, the students will likely have to make up the difference in tuition costs.
Students were angered when the Regents postponed the meeting originally scheduled for Nov. 15 and 16 out of fear that protests could turn violent.
To safeguard against any possible disruptions, the meeting will be conducted simultaneously at four different locations (UCLA, UC San Franisco-Mission Bay, UC Davis, and UC Merced) and then Regents will collaborate votes over teleconference.
ReFund California has had a hand in organizing the campus protests, effectively blending the anger against rising tuition with the more undefined anti-Wall Street sentiment.
"ReFund California has joined local Occupy general assemblies in calling for student and faculty walkouts...to open up the Regents' sham teleconfrence at the 4 UC campuses," ReRund said in a statement.
Occupy UCLA has made a strong showing at the Bruin's campus this past week as students marched, gave speeches and constructed a camp in Wilson Plaza that held 25 tents before campus police ordered them to disperse.
Fourteen UCLA protesters were arrested last Friday, and later released. UCLA's campus newspaper, The Daily Bruin, talked with three of them here.
