Voters Head To Polls for City Elections

It's election time, and in Vernon it is a time of revitalization and renewal.

Voters in dozens of cities and school districts in L.A. County headed to the polls Tuesday to cast their votes in elections for school board members, city council representatives, and local city mayors.  Each city has its own unique set of ballot issues.

Voters in the city of Vernon, which has been plagued with political scandals, are being asked to approve four measures.

The first measure seeks to impose a term limit on council members, and the second measure reaffirms the commitment to paying wages on public works projects.

The third measure removes the provision that mandates at-will employment for all city workers. And lastly, the fourth measure eliminates restrictions on the council's ability to fire the city administrator or reduce the administrator's pay.

Voters from Watts to San Pedro will vote in a special election to fill the 15th District City Council seat vacated by Janice Hahn in July.  Hahn filled the seat for Jane Harman, who left earlier this year to be the president and CEO of the think tank the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington.

In Maywood, voters will be asked whether the jobs of the city clerk and the city treasurer should be converted to appointed positions. Voters in San Marino are deciding whether or not to approve term limits for their City Council members.

But other cities have education issues at the forefront of elections.

Voters in the Las Virgenes Unified School District and the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District have the issue of parcel taxes on their ballots.

In the Newhall School District, a $60 million bond for school improvement projects is on the ballot.

In Hermosa Beach, ballot measures are centered on business-license taxes for restaurants and bars.  One of the ballots suggests increasing the amount charged, but another suggests that tax incentives should be offered to new businesses.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
