Villaraigosa Named Co-Chair for Obama Re-election Campaign

The Los Angeles Mayor will prove to play an important role in the Presidents re-election campaign.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has been chosen as one of the 35 national co-chairs for President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign. The announcement was made one week after Villaraigosa was selected to chair the Democratic National Convention in June.

Villaraigosa will chair the campaign with prominent figures such as: California Attorney General Kamala Harris, Los Angeles Labor Lader Maria Elena Durazo and actress Eva Longoria.

“The president’s national co-chairs each share the president’s vision for a future where every American can have a fair shot at success,” said Jim Messina, manager of the Obama for America campaign.

According to the Obama for America campaign, Villaraigosa will serve as an advisor on important issues, and help to recruit voters across the nation.

Villaraigosa believes that this campaign will be very important for the middle class, calling it a "make or break" election.

“On the one side is a president who is fighting to create jobs, investing in our future and working to reform our immigration system,” he said. “On the other side is a Republican Party that is rejecting common-sense jobs measures, gutting investments in our future and espousing ‘self-deportation’ policies that divide us as a nation.”

Villaraigosa has been an avid supporter of Obama’s desires to lower the corporate income tax rate, and increase transportation funding.

"Job number one is putting people back to work," Villaraigosa said, "and the president is focused on that."
