USC Institute of Urology Receives $13.3M Donation

Anonymous gift will provide funding for future projects.

USC president C.L. Max Nikias has announced an anonymous $13.3 million gift to the USC Institute of Urology.

The donation, which was announced last week, will provide funding for the USC Urology Robotics Center of Excellence, which is still in development, and a program for prostate cancer targeting.

“Today the USC Institute of Urology is an internationally renowned powerhouse in robotic and open surgery," Nikias said. "Tomorrow we look forward to being a comprehensive world leader in urology. Surgeries that were once considered fantasies are now a fact. The Institute of Urology is helping to redefine and reshape the field of urology.”

Inderbir S. Gill, executive director of the USC Institute of Urology, also presented updates on his department's progress since he arrived in 2009. Gill stressed the importance of innovation and research, growing USC's clinical enterprise and creating outreach target satellites.

“To be successful, you need a market differentiator,” Gill said. “A true market differentiator implies being the world’s best at a specific endeavor, which also drives your economic engine. You are lucky if you have one true market differentiator. USC urology has two: robotic kidney and prostate cancer surgery, and open bladder cancer surgery. We [also] lead in epigenetics research.”

In 2011, the USC Institute of Urology was ranked second in the country by the National Institutes of Health and 18th overall by the U.S. News & World Report.
