Ground Breaking and Freeway Widening on the I-5

A congestion-relief project will cost the city a hefty $110 million.

Transportation officials with Cal-trans made headway Monday on a congestion-relief project that will widen the Santa Ana (5) Freeway between Norwalk and Buena Park.

The project will cost an estimated $110 million and will widen the 65-year-old freeway as it passes the Alondra Boulevard overpass in Santa Fe Springs, according to Cal-trans officials.

California Highway Patrol officials want to inform the public of future construction and safety conditions.

"Every single person is a victim of traffic," Captain and Commander for CA Highway Patrol Daniel Minor said. "We just want to remind those people that use the I-5 freeway every day to keep their attention up and maintain their awareness so that they don't end the day or end their life as a victim of traffic that's inherent in this area."

The reconstruction includes adding general traffic and carpool lanes in each direction from North Fork Coyote Creek to Marquardt Avenue. There will be about 1.1 total miles of freeway space added.

"While many challenges had to be resolved, we never lost sight of our mutual goal to improve the quality of life for the thousands of residents and businesses that rely on the 1-5 freeway each and every day," Santa Fe Springs Mayor Pro Tem Richard Moore said.
