Wendy's Takes the Burger King Crown
Burger King lost its throne as the nation's second largest burger chain. Long time third place, lady-in-waiting Wendy's has taken the second place slot.
For the very first time since its founding in 1969, Wendy's reported Monday that the food chain's sales ranked higher than Burger King in 2011. This past year saw a total of $8.5 billion in sales for Wendy's to top a very close $8.4 billion for Burger King.
However, these two chains still come nowhere close to the McDonald's empire, which raked in $34.2 billion in sales last year alone.
Both Wendy's and Burger King still struggle to keep up with the seemingly unstoppable growth of McDonald's, which reports a 26 percent growth in sales over the last five years in comparison with Wendy's nine percent growth and Burger King's flat-lined zero.
These results come courtesy of a report by the food industry research firm Technomic Inc. that will be fully released on April 13th.
Wendy's new reign was most likely a result of their new products and efforts to reinvent the restaurant into a higher-end franchise.
Nonetheless, Burger King is making efforts to improve their image as well. The fight for the fast food kingdom is certainly on.
