Giant Bear Strolls Glendale
Animal control experts tranqualized a 500-lb black bear Tuesday morning after it was caught roaming a La Crescenta neighborhood.
The California Department of Fish and Game shot the bear with at least three tranquilizer darts before they took full effect. The bear is believed to be a male, weighing roughly 500 to 600 pounds.
Once the bear was asleep, Fish and Game loaded him into a 'culvert trap,' which according to the animal control experts is the safest way to transport the large animal.
Fish and Game have tagged the bear so he can be monitered once he's released back in the Angeles National Forest.
"The cooperative effort paid off this morning with a successful removal of the bear without injury, to the animal or any of the surrounding public," said DFG Assistant Chief Paul Hamdorf. "We are obviously very pleased that the bear will be released and that it was done safely."
He was seen sitting in a backyard before he started walking around the Glendale neighborhood. Authorites say they believe the bear is the same animal that has been spotted on several occasions over the past month.
The Twitter community has named the bear Glen Bearian. People can tweet at fictional alter-ego Glen @TheGlendaleBear.
