No Charges Filed in Death of 10-Year-Old Girl

No charges will be filed in the case of an elementary school girl who died after a fight.

Criminal charges will not be filed in the death of a 10-year-old Long Beach girl who died after being in a planned school fight over a boy.

Prosecutors did not immediately detail the reasons behind the decision not to file charges.

Joanna Ramos died about six hours after the Feb. 24 fight with an 11-year old girl in an alley near Willard Elementary School. The fight was witnessed by several classmates and took place around mid-afternoon, just after classes had ended.

Joanna went home after the fight and later complained of a headache according to police. She then vomited before falling unconscious.

Her family took her to the hospital around 6 p.m. where she was pronounced dead around 8:50 p.m.

The coroner's office ruled her death a homicide, saying the girl died from "blunt force trauma to the head as the result of an altercation."

Long Beach Police issued a statement saying the case was "a fight between two children that ended with unintended and tragic results, and the Long Beach Police Department hopes that its conclusion brings some peace to both families involved, as well as the community."
