Santorum Suspends Presidential Campaign
Rick Santorum suspended his presidential campaign in a press conference in his home state of Pennsylvania Tuesday, after his daughter Isabella was released from the hospital Monday night.
Santorum had already cancelled events and appearances for Tuesday before making the announcement. The former GOP presidential candidate reportedly did so to spend time with his 3-year-old daughter who suffers from Trisomy 18 and spent the weekend in the hospital after contracting pneumonia.
According to a report by ABC, a Republican source close to the campaign said that Santorum called Romney before conceding to him in a press conference. Romney reportedly asked to meet with Santorum in the near future.
Santorum had been second in the polls to Mitt Romney, although Santorum did not say that he endorsed Romney. However, he did promise to help the Republicans to help defeat Obama in the fall.
Although Romney has yet to gather the number of delegates needed to win the nomination, Santorum seemed to be the last viable contender facing Mitt Romney.
Still, according to the Associated Press, Newt Gingrich promised to stay in the race to give conservatives a "real choice."
