Suspect ID'd in Armed Robbery Attempt
[ UPDATE: 11:10 a.m. | The gunman shot by DPS after robbing four students has been identified as 24-year-old Jeremy Hendricks. He was arrested and taken to a local hospital with a leg injury. ]
A DPS officer-involved shooting occurred near the intersection of 30th Street and Figueroa Street around 12:40 a.m. Wednesday, according to USC Dept. of Public Safety Captain David Carlisle.
LAPD set up a command post at the intersection of 30th and Royal Streets shortly after the shooting.
According to Carlisle, a DPS officer confronted a person suspected of committing armed robbery against students. The suspect was then shot by the responding DPS officer. There have been no reports of life-threatening injuries in the incident.
The suspect has been taken into custody, according to DPS officers.
LAPD is currently investigating the "active crime scene" and is not allowing anyone in. LAPD will determine when the area will be reopened.
Students living in houses or apartment buildings in the area were either redirected or not allowed to return home.
"I was trying to go home and go to sleep," said Bryson Lloyd, a USC student living in the area. "They didn't want to let me do that."
This morning's shooting happened about a week after another shooting in the USC area that killed two USC students. Matt Weinberg, another USC student, said he was alarmed at the proximity of this morning's shooting to campus.
"It's definitely more unsettling to have something happen across the street from where I live," Weinberg said. "It was definitely a rude awakening to see how close this could happen."
