USC's First Annual South Asian Awareness Week
DISHOOM!, a new student organization that facilitates weekly discussions on issues in South Asian and diaspora communities, kicks off a week long series of South Asian cultural and educational events Monday.
The first annual South Asian Awareness Week at USC will hold performances by South Asian arts and cultural organizations at USC such as Indian Fine Arts Monday at 7 p.m. at E.F. Hutton Park.
Other events over the course of the week include: an Indian LGBTQ film screening, a reading of a Muslim American play, and several discussions about the South Asian community's impact at USC.
Coordinator Sana Shuja said USC's South Asian Awareness Week was an initiative that was undertaken by a few students last year, but did not pan out accordingly.
This year, Shuja and a few other students founded an organization called Desis Instigating Social and Historical Outreach and Opportunities en Masse! (DISHOOM!)
"It's an effort to introduce issues that South Asian diaspora communities face at USC and in the world," the coordinator said. "We're hoping to get as many people out as possible and learn as much as possible from each other."
Shuja added that South Asian Awareness events are fairly common at other campuses around the country.
"We thought it was time for it to get here since we have such a large South Asian community," Shuja said. "We're trying to explore as many facets of South Asian culture as possible."
