Ten Arrests at May Day Marches
LAPD officials arrested 10 protesters Thursday close to LAX for blocking Century Boulevard and refusing to disperse from the area.
May Day Marches swept across L.A. Thursday as thousands of protesters gathered for worker's rights and changes to government spending of taxpayer money.
Occupy L.A.'s "May 1 Four Winds/General Strike" Tuesday shut down streets from the South Bay to the San Fernando Valley, with four separate "caravans" converging in the evening at Pershing Square.
There was the South Wind Caravan at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson, the West Wind at Wilshire Boulevard and Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, the North Wind at Panorama High School in Panorama City, and the East Wind at Cesar Chavez and Atlantic Avenue in Monterey Park.
Rise Up L.A.'s march is expected to join South Wind Caravan to protest what they call the "Prison Industrial Complex."
Protesters gathered at 41st Street and Central Avenue and plan to rally at 2 p.m. at Sixth and Main Streets. At 7 p.m., a larger rally is scheduled at Pershing Square.
The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA) marched on Broadway for jobs and education, bringing together students, unions, workers, civil rights activists, and businesspeople.
Unionized service workers also started protesting at Los Angeles International Airport at noon, which could cause traffic delays, according to Airport Police Officials. They marched from Tom Bradly International Terminal to Century Boulevard and Avion Street.
The following streets are expected to be closed, according to the Emergency Management Department:
- Broadway between 11th and Temple streets
- Olympic Boulevard between Hill and Main streets
- Ninth Street between Hill and Broadway
- Eighth Street between Spring Street and Broadway
- Seventh Street between Hill and Spring
- Sixth Street between Hill and Broadway
- Fifth Street between Spring and Broadway
- Fourth Street between Hill and Broadway
- Third Street between Spring and Broadway
- Second Street between Hill and Broadway
- First Street between Hill and Broadway
- Judge John Aiso between First and Temple streets.
