Dornsife Appoints New Dean

Dr. Steve Kay will become the new Dean of the USC Dornsife College of Letters Arts and Sciences.

USC announced Tuesday that Dr. Steve A. Kay will be the twenty-first Dean of the Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters Arts and Sciences. Dr. Kay will also hold the Anna H. Bing Dean's Chair.

Dr. Kay will begin October 1.  Since Dean Gillman steps down on June 30, Executive Vice Provost Michael Quick will assume the administrative duties beginning July 1.  Dr. Quick will be assisted by Vice Dean Steven Lamy, George Sanchez and Donal Manahan.

Dr. Kay previously worked at the University of California, San Diego as Dean of the Division of Biological Sciences. As dean at UCSD, he led over 6,000 students in the undergraduate biology department. In 2008, he was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

In 2011, he was chosen to receive the Martin Gibbs Medal by the American Soceity for Plant Biology. He is also the UCSD Distiguinshed Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology. Dr. Kay received his Ph.D from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom.

Dr. Kay had held faculty positions at the Rockefeller University, the University of Virginia and the Scripps Research Institute.  He was the Director of Discovery Research at the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation, where he helped build research programs to apply genome science to biomedical research and drug discovery.

COMMENTS
