Dornsife Polls Look at Prop 30, 37

A Dornsife/L.A. Times Poll shows support slipping for Prop 30 and 37.

The USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences has teamed up with the Los Angeles Times to conduct a series of polls, examining how voters feel about the current issues.

One particular poll looking into Prop 30, which would increase sales tax to help fund public education and public safety, has shown support headed on a downward spiral. According to the poll, Governor Jerry Brown's initiative has dropped below 50 percent for the first time.

The most recent numbers show 46 percent of California voters favor Prop. 30, while 42 percent oppose it.This is a sharp, negative turn from last month, when 55 percent of voters supported it. When the bill was first released, 64 percent of voters supported it.

Support for Prop 30 has fallen across demographic lines.Among registered Democratic voters, support for the initiative fell 5 percentage points in the last month, to 64-23. Among Republican voters, support fell 8 points, to 20-71. Among voters without party affiliation, support also fell 8 points, to 50-36.

Dornsife and the L.A. Times also polled voters about Prop 37, which requires food with genetically modified ingredients to be re-labeled, and found that, like Prop 30, support has sharply declined.

In the latest poll, only 44 percent of California voters support the measure. That is a 17 point drop from the USC Dornsife/L.A. Times Poll conducted in September 2012. Opponents have been pouring money into advertising against Prop 37, and proponents of the measure have struggled to stay in the race.
