Investigation Continues in Downey Shooting

Police continued their search to identify a suspect in the shootings which killed three Downey residents.

Update 5:20 p.m.: Police have detained four suspects who may have been involved in the incident. The suspects were not immediately arrested in connection with the shootings.

Investigators examined surveillance video Thursday as they searched for the suspect who killed three people and wounded two others in a pair of shootings in Downey.

Police said the attacks were targeted at members of a family who owned a local fire extinguisher business.

The shooting began around 11:10 a.m. Wednesday at the business, United States Fire Protection, located in the 8700 block of Cleta Street, and then continued at a nearby home two blocks away, according to police and Downey Fire Department spokesman Jason Patao.

Two shooting victims died at the business -- one male and one female -- and another female victim died at the home where the second half of the shooting took place.

Two other people were wounded during the shootings and were listed in critical but stable.

Downey police Lt. Dean Milligan said all of the victims were members of the same family, a fact which he said led police to conclude they were specifically targeted.

"We do not believe that this was a random act of violence," Milligan said.

"We do believe that for some reason this family was targeted both at their place of business and their residence. We do not know why at this point in time. But that being the case, two specific locations this close to each other all involving family members, we do not believe this act was random. There is a direct correlation for some reason."

According to police officials, the gunman went to the business first and spoke with some people inside before opening fire. Then, the suspect proceeded down the street and into the home where he continued shooting.

The home was either a residence of the business owner or relatives, police said.

Officials said two 911 calls were made about the shootings, one at 11:12 a.m. saying shots had been fired at the business, and then five minutes later saying more shots had been fired at the nearby residence in the 8500 block of Cleta Street.

After the second half of the shooting at the home, the suspect drove away in a 2010 black Chevrolet Camaro with California license plate 6LEA010, according to police.

The car is owned by either one of the victims or a relative of a victim, Milligan said.

Milligan said none of the shooting victims could identify the shooter and he declined to comment or speculate why the family was targeted.

Milligan also said there was no immediate evidence that anything had been stolen from either the business or home.

A Downey police desk officer said Thursday that detectives were continuing to examine surveillance video and that no arrests had been made in the case.
